In John 12:20–21, the Greeks approached Phillip requesting to see Jesus. On learning this, Jesus responded with the grain of wheat’s need to fall into the earth and die to bear much fruit. With this, Jesus was showing that the solution was that Christ suffer and die so that His life would be reproduced in other grains of wheat that would be taken to the lost sheep of Israel and would reproduce into other grains, in His likeness. The answer to the Thessalonians’ request came with Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy’s visit to Thessalonica. They represented grains conformed to Jesus’ likeness.

Paul’s purpose was to fulfill the Great Commission and make disciples. Nevertheless, due to Greek culture, it was necessary to leave a written record of the teachings that He himself had received and learned. The teachings held what was necessary to be a true disciples of Jesus so that the fulfillment of the Commission would extend to other territories and generations in the future. We will see in this course some of the important concepts that are imparted in these epistles such as: love, faith, hope, humility, idolatry, repentance, consecration, the Lord’s second coming, resurrection, and eternal judgment.
