They Knew Their God Vol. 4

“Walk about Zion… tell the towers thereof. Mark ye well her bulwarks, consider her palaces; that ye may tell it to the generation following.” These words from the forty-eighth Psalm were impressed upon our minds nineteen years ago, as a commission to search into Christian biography and to pass on to the Lord’s people that which had been so inspiring to us. And so after this lapse of time, we have the privilege of sending out these pictures of Zion’s towers-her prophets and watchmen, Zion’s bulwarks-her reformers and defenders of the faith, and Zion’s palaces-those human dwellings of God, made beautiful and majestic by the presence of the King of kings. The title, “They Knew Their God,” has been chosen as one that includes the introduction to God via de New Birth, the receiving of the fullness of the Holy Spirit, and the further “journey into God,” which progressively reveals His character. We have included characters from both sexes, from varying nationalities, from successive eras of time, and from differing church backgrounds. God never repeats Himself in human experience, and it is refreshing to note that these saints, in venturing their all upon God, have left us individual histories which enrich the spiritual kingdom by that same delightful variety we discover in all God’s “other” creations. We do not submit these sketches that they should be imitated in detail as to the individual’s search for God, or as to his or her evidence of that attainment. We pray, rather, that the faith and courage of these saints in proving and knowing God, might encourage us to realize there is no limit, except in ourselves, to what we might discover of His kingdom while here in “time.” We have been most grateful for the collaboration of Miss Elizabeth M. Hey, a lifetime friend who has contributed much in biographical research and in writing and improving the text. Our daughter, Mrs. Gertrude Tait, has also improved some of these sketches and helped in completing others. We owe our grateful thanks for the secretarial assistance of our faithful helpers, Miss Beulah Freeman and the Misses Margaret and Morag Smith. Daniel tells us that “the people that do know their God shall be strong and do exploits” (Dan. 11:32). It is our earnest prayer in this shallow, religious age, that these men and women who removed all barriers and boundaries to their search after and exploration of their own God in His length, breadth, depth and height, might beckon us on to a similar, unlimited grasp of the Unseen.
